Practice No. 10 Takeaways

Early Thursday morning the Ducks were up and practicing football. We are under two weeks away from the spring football game and the Ducks look ready to play some football. One group of Ducks that has been receiving a lot of positive attention since the scrimmage is the defensive line.

It is no secret that Oregon’s defense has struggled in recent years. The Ducks could no longer rely on being able to outscore their opponents and they were ranked at the bottom of FBS rankings in defense and penalties. Not a winning combination. It was only when Jim Leavitt came on board that the defense started to turn around. Now in year two of Jim Leavitt’s tenure the Ducks defense is looking really strong.

One of the players who is looking to make an immediate impact this season is Popo Aumavae, the red-shirt freshman defensive lineman. I got the chance to catch up with him before practice and he seemed very excited for the opportunity to play. He said he was feeling great coming off his rehab and was looking forward to get in the rotation. And when I asked who he has been watching and learning from he said the whole defensive line. When I asked again he specified that Jordon Scott has been a big influence and how much Scott has improved during his time at Oregon. This sentiment bled over to when I spoke to Troy Dye who spoke to how the whole defensive line has really stepped up since last year. He said he was impressed by their performance during the scrimmage and continued effort in the practice since. He also mentioned Scott when I asked who has been sticking out to him in practice.

Scott was a fan favorite last year and from watching him at practice I think he is only going to get more fans come fall.

Overall the practices have really been building in intensity and energy especially since the scrimmage. It looks like the scrimmage gave the Ducks a taste of what it was like to play football again and they want more.
