Practice No. 11 Takeaways

Football was in the air today at Autzen Stadium. Maybe because it was because practice was in the afternoon instead of early in the morning, maybe it was because they got to go through the tunnel before practice, or maybe because practice was in Autzen Stadium. Whatever it was the Ducks were going at 110% today and looked ready to kill the season.

Before practice started I got the chance to speak to one of the newest Oregon coaching hires, Bobby Williams. Coach Williams comes to Oregon from Alabama football where he spent 10 years coaching and won 5 national championships.

Coach Williams is one of the best and most respected football coaches in the nation. His special teams unit was a big reason for Alabama’s 2017 national championship with a successful onside kick late in the game.

So, getting Coach Williams is a huge win for the Oregon football program but how did Coach Cristobal land such a big catch?

Coach Williams said that he and Cristobal had a great working relationship at Alabama and described Cristobal as a “relentless coach with a lot of energy.” He also talked about Oregon coming on to his radar when he came down to Eugene as part of the Michigan State football program saying he has been paying attention ever since. He was especially impressed with the program during the 2014 season.

When asked about how he plans to help bring the same mentality that they had at Alabama Coach Williams said the challenge is sustaining play at that high of a level, you are always the team that other teams train to beat. He did say that Coach Cristobal and the rest of the coaching staff has done a great job starting that culture here.

Coach Williams will have to face new rules in regards to special teams this season in hopes of making the sport safer. He said it is going to force kick units and return units to come up with new strategies and that the ball would be kicked out of bounds more. Regardless, Coach Williams is up to the task and there isn’t another coach out there I trust more to lead the special team unit.
