Herbert Talks at Media Day

August 6, 2018

Oregon's QB1 was front and center at Media day on Sunday. Justin Herbert fielded a number of questions from reporters covering an array of topics.

Questions started out asking his thoughts on the Pac-12 conference as a whole.

"The Pac-12 is always a very competitive league. I think it's very talented and regardless of the divisions, I think both divisions have great talent. I'm just looking forward to being back and getting ready to play again."

Next was a question regarding his 'lofty' status as a high NFL draft pick and how he's handled that so far.

"It's been a huge honor for sure but it hasn't been quite as hard as people would think it would be. I have great guys around me, great friends that keep me down to earth. They need my best just like I expect from them so I just focus on this team and I'm excited to be here."

Last season Herbert missed an important string of games. It was in his absence he realized how much he enjoyed the game of football.

"I found out how much football meant to me just watching from the sideline. I was doing as much as I could but it really wasn't that much. Football just means a lot to be out here with the guys and the coaches, it's special."

Last season during his injury time, Braxton Burmeister stepped in to lead the team. Although it was a bit of a rough patch, Herbert voiced his support for his teammate. He also commented on the younger protege' Tyler Shough.

"Braxton's done an incredible job. He's one of the guys that's always there working hard. He's a great guy off the field as well. I think the situation he was thrown into last year was really tough. For anyont to be thrown into that situation that's about as good as anyone could have done. He hasn't missed a workout."

"Tyler is an exceptional player as well. He came in early and he got right down to business and he's a strong thrower. I'm excited to see what he can do too."

One of the big questions was who's stood out through the teams first three practices and this off-season.

"Outside of the bigger name guys like Dillon Mitchell and Johnny Johnson I think Brenden Schooler's going to be a great receiver this year. CJ Verdell. Jaylon Redd, made some big plays last year but I'm looking forward to more big plays this year."

Coach Aaron Feld's strength program has become a hot topic. Even Justin Herbert credited the new strength program with his growth.

"The weight room was really big with coach Feld coming in. Just having everyone around he's done a great job of getting everyone up to speed. A guy like Tony Brooks-James has put on 15-20 pounds and he's looked really impressive so far. And I know he's not the only guy and I know coach Feld will tell you that."

Lastly was 'the do.' Herbert's hair should soon have its own twitter handle and he commented on the change in appearance.

"I don't really think it was a bet. It kind of started out as a joke. But Brenden Schooler has held me to it. I have to follow through with it."
