Presser: Mario Cristobal

September 10, 2018

Following the win on Saturday Oregon returned to the field on Sunday. On Monday Mario Cristobal met with media to go over all things Portland State.

Even with a strong win and a solid showing, Mario Cristobal said his team will need to continue to improve.

For the most part the team escaped Saturday injury-free. Cristobal talked about that and more in his press conference.

Here are the highlights from his conference, a video will also be posted shortly.

On Penei Sewell:

"He doesn't flinch and I think he's just scratching the surface of what he's going to be. Shane Lemieux and Penei led the team in knockdowns again this week."

On his team's performance:

"The most important improvement area for us was in the way we played. From snap to whistle. Some really good effort. Our pad level was better. We tackled better. Overall I thought the attention to detail, the discipline and the effort were better."

On his TE group:

"Proud of those guys. Every single one of them. Kano obviously caught the touchdown pass. A guy that gets overlooked a bunch is Ryan Bay. I don't think he touched the ball. He's very versatile. I thought the position stepped up."

On the penalties:

"I'd like to say I'm really proud but we had five but we should have had one at the most. I'm pleased with the progress but it still has to get better. If you don't shoot yourself in the foot, your chances go up exponentially."

On San Jose State:

"They play two quarterbacks. One is more of a pocket passer and one is more of a runner. They have some fast and athletic guys. But the tight end is by far one of their best players. He presents a challenge for us. They are a seasoned group on the line of scrimmage. (on defense)"

On spreading the ball to WR's:

"I like getting the ball to our playmakers and the ones that are playing the best. That makes for a great day. That being said there's still the business aspect of it, as guys continue to separate themselves, performance-wise, they will get the ball more."

On depth improving:

"We are. I think that 1- play drive by the 2's was a nice exclamation point for that group. They controlled the LOS and they lined up correctly for the most part. You want to be able to play guys and prove they can play winning football for us. We're going to have to count on them as starters at some point."

On Injuries and La'Mar Winston:

"I feel good about La'Mar. He did practice yesterday. He's been cleared already. Stack is just about ready to go. We'll see how he performs tomorrow. Some bumps and bruises but nothing that should prevent anyone from playing on Saturday."

On reaching their goal:

"We made that goal so high it's borderline unreachable. I think we're running better routes. Our linebackers are fitting and tackling better. It's still not where we want it or need it to be. We are very focused on skill stuff, not so much the schematic part of it. We're trending upwards. But we gotta keep trending upwards to reach our goals."
