Prediction Time: OSU

November 22, 2018

On Friday the Ducks and Beavers will tangle once again for the traditional Civil War game.

For Oregon State its a chance to avenge last years big loss and for Oregon it’s a key chance to notch an 8th win on the season.

We know what’s at stake here so let’s just get right to the predictions ahead of this one.

The dreaded road game. Oregon is superior in every way here and yet I get the sense this one will be a lot closer than it should. Perhaps its the road game, a Friday game and familiar opponents. I do think this will end up as one of those ‘ugly wins’ for Oregon. But at this point, Oregon will take it. As has been the case for the past few weeks, Oregon just needs to start out strong and not put themselves behind early.

Will the 2018 Civil War be more like the 2016 game, won 34-24 by the Beavers in Mark Helfrich's swan song as Duck head coach, or last year's tilt, a 69-10 Oregon victory in Willie Taggart's last game at the Oregon helm? Let's look at two statistics. Oregon is 6-1 at home this season but 1-3 on the road, and this game is in Corvallis. On the flip side, the Ducks want to run the ball, and Oregon State's rush defense is historically bad. On average, the Beavers yield almost 7 yards every time opponents run the ball; only one other FBS team is worse. If that number holds true on Friday, it means that theoretically, Oregon could throw an incomplete pass every third play, run it twice and STILL make a first down – with almost 4 yards to spare! Teams that are that bad against the run usually have better stats against the pass, but the Beavers top only eight FBS teams in pass efficiency defense, and they're last in the Pac-12 in sacks. On a neutral field, Oregon should score 50 points or more against Oregon State, but given the Ducks' road woes, dock them a dozen. Unlike their defense, the Beaver offense is no joke, so make it:

Oregon is headed up north for the Civil war game this week. Oregon state, has not been a good team this year, however, they have been competitive in a few of their games, and have shown progress within the program. Oregon state will not go down so easily in this matchup, and will definitely give the Ducks a fight. However, this is a rivalry game and the Beavers will give Oregon a tough time early on and won’t be able to get going until the second quarter. Therefore, Oregon will shut the beavers out in the second quarter and continue the momentum that they had in the second quarter and push through until the end of the game. The team also wants to send the seniors out and let them remember beating the Beavers on the road and show coach Mario Cristobal that he was the right guy for the job and improve their record from last year.

I think Oregon is going to come into this game determined to not have a repeat of what happened two years ago. That motivation combined with the Beaver’s weak defense will lead to an early Duck lead. I think Oregon State’s offense is talented enough to get a few scores on the Duck defense but not enough to keep it close. Hopefully this game is a blowout in favor of the Ducks and I’m not taking pictures in the rain for nothing.

I think this game is going to be closer than Oregon fans would prefer.  The Beavers sport a pretty good offense, so I expect them to put up some points.  And we all know about Oregon’s road struggles.  But in the end I think Herbert will be able to make enough plays on offense to pull off the win for the Ducks, but it won’t be easy.  This one will be close into the 4th quarter.
