Recap: Verdell Leads Big Win

November 23, 2018

Oregon hit the road Friday to Corvallis for the 122nd Civil War game. It would be a very interesting game however with some big plays and injuries and more along the way.

The game would start with Oregon electing to sit Dillon Mitchell for the first quarter. The offense would lean on Travis Dye and CJ Verdell to get things going however.

Oregon State would take the first drive down and on 4th and 5, Oregon’s defense would hold.

Oregon would take the opening drive down with a heavy dose of the run for 46 yards on the ground before throwing to CJ Verdell for a 21 yard score.

The Ducks defense would hold and get the ball back for Justin Herbert and company.

A big dose of CJ Verdell would help Oregon move the ball 56-yards for another score. Oregon would take a 14-0 lead into the 2nd quarter, which Dillon Mitchell would return for.

The Beavers would respond with a big kick return to midfield. On 3rd and goal Luton would attempt a ‘jump pass’ but Troy Dye would get his hand on the ball and tip it up for Nick Pickett to bring in. Keeping Oregon State scoreless into the 2nd quarter.

On the final possession of the first half, OSU would get some points however. The Beavers would drive 8 plays for 43 yards before striking a 45 yard field goal.

With :33 seconds left in the half, Oregon would send out Tyler Shough in place of Justin Herbert. On the previous drive Herbert would take a sack that would send him to the locker room early.

Oregon would get the ball to start the second half with a 21-3 lead. Braxton Burmeister would lead Oregon down the field for an opening touchdown without ever throwing a pass. The 11 play, 85 yard drive would be all on the ground with Verdell doing a lot of the heavy lifting.

At 28-3, Oregon State would not give up.

The Beavers would go right to the air to beat an Oregon secondary that had given up several big plays on the day. A ‘controversial’ catch in the end zone by Timmy Hernandez would cut the lead down to a 28-9 ball game with OSU missing the extra point.

Oregon would stall on the next drive and punt the ball right back to OSU in the pouring rain.

It wouldn’t last long as Oregon State would attempt a trick play that would twice toss the ball backwards. As Luton got his hands on it, Ugo Amadi would slap the ball away for Gus Cumberlander to land on.

With Oregon in scoring position, on 4th and 1, Verdell would pound it in from 14 yards out to put Oregon up 34-9. The Ducks would miss the 2-point attempt.

With a hold from the defense, OSU would punt away the ball but Amadi would backtrack and end up being tackled inside the 5. But CJ Verdell would continue with his big day leading the rushing attack and moving the ball.

We’d enter the fourth quarter with Oregon holding that 34-9 lead and the football.

Having not played a great game thus far, Thomas Graham would get his revenge with a 38 yard pick-six moving the lead to 41-9.

The bleeding wouldn’t stop there however.

Oregon stuck to the ground and Travis Dye would roll 39 yards to pay dirt and give Oregon a 48-9 lead.

For the second time in the second half, Thomas Graham would reel in another pass from Luton, giving Oregon the ball back with roughly 8 minutes to go.

Just when you thought it couldn’t get any worse, Oregon again pounded another one in, this time it was CJ Verdell adding in his fifth touchdown of the day.

Verdell would finish with over 200 total yards and 5 touchdowns on the day.

A final of 55-15 from Corvallis putting Oregon at 8-4 overall on the season.
