Ducks Handle Florida A&M

December 18, 2018

The Ducks improved to 8-3 after beating the Florida A&M Rattlers 71-64. The game wasn’t always pretty but in the end the Ducks walked away with the win.

If you are an Oregon Duck men’s basketball fan I guess you are just going to have to get used to the fact that Oregon games start off really rough. It happened against San Diego, Boise State and it happened again today against Florida A&M.

The spark for Ducks was a combination between Victor Bailey Jr. and Kenny Wooten. I don’t think it was a coincidence that the Ducks momentum started to swing when Kenny Wooten checked in for the Ducks. He immediately impacted the game recording 2 blocks within the first couple of minutes of checking into the game. Wooten finished the game with 4 points, 7 rebounds and 2 blocks. But the bigger spark, in my opinion, came from Victor Bailey Jr.

I didn’t know this until I heard the announcer say it but Bailey Jr. is shooting above 50% from the field, above 50% from behind the arc and above 90% from the free-throw line. The Ducks are missing a true shooter in their line-up but Bailey Jr. has proven to be a suitable replacement. Bailey Jr. really stepped up for the Ducks at a time in the game when nothing was falling for the Ducks Bailey was making shots. From dunks and threes to mid range tear drops Bailey Jr. showed today that he can score from anywhere on the court. He’s only a sophomore right now but has all the athleticism and talent to be a really big talent for the Ducks in the coming years. Victor Bailey Jr. finished the game with 16 points, it wasn’t his career high (23) but it was exactly what the Ducks needed against the Rattlers.

Paul White is also deserving of a shout out for his performance today. I’ll be the first to admit I’m not White’s biggest fan but these last two games he has really stepped up for the Ducks. He gets minutes playing anywhere from the 5 to the 3 and makes plays on both sides of the court. Today he scored 10 points, 5 assists, 2 rebounds and recorded a pair of blocks. I still don’t think White should be starting for the Ducks but he definitely has a place on the roster as a 6th or 7th man.

The glaring issue for this Ducks team is those first 10 minutes of the first half when Oregon is playing poorly. Once Oregon starts playing in conference games periods like that

are going to be the difference between wins and losses. If Florida A&M was a better team they wouldn’t have given up that 8 point lead they had so quickly. I think the reason for the Ducks being so out of it these last couple of games has been because Bol Bol has been out. Hopefully Bol’s injury isn’t serious and he is able to join his teammates soon so they can resume the flow the team was getting into.

The Ducks next game is against Baylor at Baylor at 4PM on Friday, Dec. 21.
