Heyward Excited to Work With Avalos

March 13, 2019

One of the bigger stories to date has been the move to dismiss Jim Leavitt and replace him. While many expected Keith Heyward to take over, it was ultimately Andy Avalos landing the job.

The media took time to ask Heyward where he was at with the decision.

Also Heyward talked about the mid-year guys, replacing Ugo Amadi and more. You can read our cliff notes below or watch the full video posted at the bottom of this page.

On Spring Ball So Far:

“I think it’s really good. What we’re seeing is guys flying around, getting to the ball. It’s great to see all the mid-year guys running around too. I’m excited.”

On Install So Far:

“This is when you want to develop techniques and fundamentals. Develop good habits.”

On the Mid-Year guys:

“I’m staring at the safeties a lot. Kayvon forced a fumble today. Ge’mon is trying to figure it all out. I saw Dru flying around.”

Feeling Slighted at not getting DC:

“Absolutely. That’s my goal. I definitely want to be the defensive coordinator. It didn’t happen this time around but I’m confident I’ll get my time. I’m excited for our program. I’ve known Andy for a long time. I was happy for him to come in and do it. I was a little disappointed in myself to be honest. But coach Cristobal did what’s best. But I’m excited at where we’re headed.”

How Much is New Under Avalos vs Leavitt:

“So much right now it’s both. We are going to carry over some words. So we can translate some same concepts. But there are some new things too.”

On Replacing Ugo:

“That’s something we gotta keep developing. Hopefully by Fall someone will come out with that.”
