Breakout Candidates: No. 11

I know there have been questions about my list but it's time to put those to rest. We have our first current player from this Oregon team for our list. And I promise he’s the first of many.

But I had a tough decision to make here. In fact the rest of this list gets really tough. Not that 15-12 were any picnic.

I might have missed the mark by not puttin Adrian Jackson here. And only time will tell. But it’s my list and I get to make the final call so here it is.

After signing MJ Cunningham somewhat late in the process, a redshirt year really didn’t come as any surprise. But with that year behind him it’s time to see if he is ready to make an impact at Oregon.

Why He’s on the List:

He’s an athlete first and foremost. Cunningham played a lot of positions in Portland, including quarterback. Which lends to his overall athleticism.

But he signed with Oregon as a linebacker. He’s listed on the Oregon site (GoDucks.com) at 6-foot-2, 229-pounds now. That’s some good size to play nearly every position at the linebacker group.

He’s lost some bad weight upon arrival and added some speed. Those are both pluses.

I’m also hearing Ken Wilson really likes his upside in his linebacker group. That should bode well for Cunningham and his upside in this defense.

Why Not:

It's simple really. Who does he replace? There’s some really good talent ahead of him and around him.

This group is probably a year away from needing some of these youngsters to come in. But a guy like Cunningham is so versatile he can fill a lot of spots and that’s probably got some real value to Ken Wilson and Andy Avalos.

Furthermore the guy I left off this list is Adrian Jackson and he’s got just as much right to claim a spot if one opens up.

It’s a bit of a dogfight right now but at the end of the day, iron sharpens iron. This is a great problem for this defense and Mario Cristobal.
