On Tuesday Mario Cristobal spent time with the media following his fifth football practice of the Fall.

The hot topic of the day was the injury to senior receiver Brenden Schooler. Cristobal confirmed his injury and offered a 6-8 week recovery timeline.

Additionally media asked about the competition and Mase Funa playing outside linebacker among other topics.

Read the highlights below or the full interview posted at the bottom.

On Schooler Injury:

“Brenden hurt his foot. And he hurt it pretty good. He had a procedure yesterday. It will be six weeks optimistically, maybe as many as 8 weeks. We feel terrible for him, tremendous human being. He means a lot to this team. He’ll be around because his leadership will be needed.”

On Replacing Schooler:

“The way these guys have rotated. They’ve gotten equal reps across the board. We feel strong about the development of that position.”

On the Competition:

“I love the way were competing in practice. If numbers were off the jerseys, it’d be tough to know who’s competing. I say from a cultural standpoint, the way we’ve attacked the grind. There’s so many guys that are a 2-3 year starter but there’s a guy now chomping at his heels.”

On Mykael Wright:

“I think he should hire Thomas (Graham) as his agent. You have to play the game to see those types of compliements. I love Mykael Wright. The way he attacks the game. He’s gained 10 pounds and he’s faster than when he showed up. He’s more explosive.”

Other injuries:

“Daewood (Davis) and Justin (Johnson) should be back tomorrow.”

On Haki Woods:

“He’s playing the nickel, he’s playing corner, he’s playing safety. His top end speed is through the roof. We’re excited about Haki. He’s been very productive.”

On Mase Funa at OLB:

“For us, we gotta get him on the field. As early as we can. Right now that’s the best way we can see getting him out there.”
