Five Things I Want to See vs Cal

October 5, 2019

On Saturday when Oregon faces Cal it’s a huge step towards how the Ducks would like to finish this season. Problem is it's a tough stretch for Oregon starting this week.

Cal isn’t operating at a 100-percent with an injury at quarterback and some other nicks. That’s probably the big reason the line moved from 15-20 this week.

The stakes are high for the Ducks and for Cal, hoping to escape a 2nd straight conference loss.

Here are the few items I'm looking for today in Oregon's matchup vs Cal.

Dominate the LOS

Just get back to being the bully on the field. If this is a staple of your identity, it’s time to get back to business. Pass pro, run blocking, make this a clean game and impose your will on Cal from start to finish.

I don’t need to see Oregon put up huge numbers as long as it’s a clean game and we aren't seeing a bunch of 1 yard runs. Just a nice clean game with some great runs mixed in with keeping No. 10 clean and off the turf.

Get back to basics, run your plays and make Cal quit somewhere in the third quarter like Nevada did.

I know on the podcast this week my lock of the week was Oregon going over 250 rush yards. I’m ok with them not hitting that mark if it's consistent production on the ground.

Stretch the Field Vertically

Schooler and Pittman return and that’s a big help to this team. Even if they don’t have a ton of deep catches, at least the threat will push the defense back and help with the run game.

Pittman should be a huge key to this. And again I'm not expecting a massive day from him statistically. It would be nice but I want to temper expectations a bit for a true freshman playing his first college football game coming off an injury.

The last few weeks we’ve seen Breeland exposing the seam of some 3-3-5 defenses, but really Oregon needs that outside presence able to do the same.

Team Shout

Led by Troy Dye but now easily one of my favorite parts about Oregon home games. In week one we saw Dye get ‘turnt up’ on the field for Shout. The next week he stayed a little more on the sidelines but also had a number of teammates involved. Also a lot o fun.

These guys work hard. And while I'm not a fan of show-boating, I love seeing kids have a good time doing something they love.

A little bit louder now, a little bit louder now.....

Turnovers & Points

This defense is playing at a very high level this season. There’s almost nothing more you can ask from them. But I’m going to.

So far they haven’t had a ton of turnovers and not many of them resulting in points. The scoop and score, the pick-six, I’m hoping to see some of that this week.

With Devon Modster likely running for his life many plays, I'd love to see the defense make him pay for some ill-advised throws. I think this could be a big week for Deommodore Lenoir, Thomas Graham, Jevon Holland and even Nick PIckett laying some lumber leading to fumbles. Don’t worry, I haven’t forgotten about you too Brady Breeze.

I expect we see a heavy dose of Pickett today as he’s a little better in run support and I expect Cal to try and run the ball quite a bit today. At least as long as the game is within reach.

Start out HOT

So on the heels of what I just posted above, Oregon can end this game in the first quarter. If Oregon can manage to start out hot and build an early lead, this game could get sideways in a hurry. With Modster I'm not sure Cal is built to come from behind. They are strong in the run game but when you’re down 21 or more, it’s hard to stick with with it.

I’m not saying this game is over in the first half, but you can certainly make Cal a lot more one-dimensional and force them to put the game in Modster's hands. If you’re Mario Cristobal you’ll take that gamble any day of the week.

We play FOUR Quarters (Bonus)

I don’t want to be the guy that constantly rides the student section, but you literally have one job. Show up and be crazy.

An often talked about topic is the amount of students leaving at halftime and not returning. I understand the no re-entry rule now exists but I'm not sure it’s really enforcing students to stay all game.

Look, I get it, you want to get to the party, get your drink on, have some fun. I was young once, a long time ago. But just hang out a little longer and make Autzen a very special, loud environment. Get that magic back to Autzen.
