Post Game: Mario Cristobal Talks Win Over USC

November 2, 2019

Wrapping up a big win Saturday night was media meeting with Mario Cristobal in Los Angeles. Coach Cristobal talked about coming out of LA with a quality win over a quality team.

He also briefly talked about the play of his defensive backs and Justin Herbert.

Here are a few of the top quotes from him in Saturday night’s press conference.

Opening Statement:

“Really proud of our guys for going out on the road against an excellent team like USC. We started a little bit slow but then we got going. We played with fire and passion, sometimes a little too much. But we were able to overcome some of those self-inflicted wounds and get a win.”

Getting Better on the Road:

“It’s development over time. Familiarity. We now have our coaching staff together for two consecutive years. The evolvement of the offense as well. We’ve been training our guys to develop a mental toughness to be able to go on the road and be successful. That was a tough thing, it’s been a huge point of emphasis. We’re starting to get much better results.”

On hit on Herbert:

“I saw the play, I don’t think he took a serious injury kind of hit. It was at the thigh level. Those things hurt. We felt like talking to him on the field he was going to be ok. Just happy he was able to come back and play.”

On the rivalry:

“Both sides were really passionate about this game. They’ve been playing ball with and against each other since they were knee high.”

On the big win:

“In this conference, a 1 point win, a 10 point win, you take it. It’s very competitive.”

On the big plays prior to halftime:

“They (Brady Breeze/Mykael Wright) provided all of the momentum. Those two plays took us into the locker room with a lot of energy, a lot of juice. Big time momentum swing.”

On the DB Play:

“They played with a chip on their shoulder. There were some really good adjustments that helped them out. But at the end of the day they played really good football. Just proud of the way they practiced. Really proud of the way we traveled. The level of focus was tremendous.”

On the Playoff Talk:

“It’s a bye week so our attention is on ourselves. I never comment about anything but the next game coming up. I feel we need to be in the conversation. We gotta keep getting better, we gotta keep playing better.”
