Arizona State was able to pull off the upset and beat Oregon 72-66. Oregon had things rolling early, but after Arizona State made some adjustments defensively Oregon simply didn’t have an answer for them.

Ruthy Hebard got things rolling early as she scored six points in a row to open the game. After a Sabrina bucket Arizona State was forced to call the early timeout as Oregon led 8-2.

Arizona State would pull within 2 to make it a 12-10 game but Oregon would go on a bit of a run to close out the quarter. Taylor Chavez hit back to back 3’s to extend their lead. On her second one she snagged an offensive rebound and instead of going back up with it she ran back to the 3 point line to take the shot.

Jaz Shelly hit a corner 3 at the buzzer to give Oregon the 23-15 lead at the end of the 1st quarter. The game really started to turn once Oregon started pushing the ball on the offensive side of the court. Arizona State couldn’t quite match their tempo and Oregon was getting open looks from everywhere.

Oregon would continue to build on their lead as they were up 31-19 with just over 5 minutes left in the 2nd quarter. The team was moving well when they didn’t have the ball in their hands and it was creating a lot of open looks at the hoop. While they weren’t finishing every shot, they still were positioning themselves nicely to get those open looks.

Arizona State would continue to fight their way back into this game as they only trailed 35-28 going into halftime. Offensively for Oregon everything really started to slow down and they weren’t playing with the same tempo that helped them get such a big lead early in the game. Arizona State also started knocking down a few big 3’s and it really helped them cut the lead to only 7.

The third quarter would continue to be physical as both teams were playing with a lot of heart. Oregon held the 47-37 lead with just over 4 minutes left in the 3rd quarter. Sabally was really starting to get things going as she had a huge bucket at the rim and then on the next possession she knocked down a big 3 to kill any momentum Arizona State had.

The fourth quarter would start out with both teams trading buckets, but Arizona State went on a quick 8-0 run to cut the lead to 56-52 with just under 5 minutes left. Oregon just couldn’t make a shot and defensively they looked almost out of sync as they were giving up some open shots.

Arizona State would extend that run to a 14-0 run and they took the 58-56 lead before coach Graves took a timeout to calm the team down. Sabrina knocked down a pair of free throws to tie it up.

The game would keep going back and forth with Arizona State hitting some clutch shots to give them as big as a 3 point lead with under a minute left. Sabrina knocked down another pair of free throws to cut the deficit to only 1 with 24 seconds remaining.

Arizona State was able to hit all of their free throws down the stretch and they did a great job at not giving up the 3 ball to Oregon. Arizona State was able to pull off the massive upset and win 72-66.

For Oregon this ends their 6 game winning streak and hands them their first conference loss this season. Sabrina was able to finish the game with a double double, but outside of her and Ruthy no one could really get anything going consistently on the offensive side of the ball.

Arizona State did a great job at using their length to give Oregon so many problems getting open looks. The biggest problem this team has had so far this year is being able to create open looks for themselves outside of Sabrina. This game won’t completely ruin their chances at the 1 seed, but Oregon is going to have to play almost perfect for the rest of the year to end up getting that 1 seed.
