Oregon Handles Arizona State 78-69

January 11, 2020

Oregon was looking to get a home sweep of the Arizona schools and they did just that by beating Arizona State 78-69

Things got going quickly when Pritchard knocked down an open 3 on the first possession. However Remy Martin would come right down the court and answer back with a 3 of his own. A few possessions later and Mathis and Pritchard both hit another pair of 3’s. Duarte followed them up by hitting a 3 of his own to give Oregon the 14-12 lead about 5 minutes into the game.

Pritchard would continue his hot start by hitting yet another 3 pointer. He then broke his defenders ankles and hit a cutting Shakur Juiston who slammed it home. The crowd went absolutely nuts as Pritchard had himself an incredible 7 minute stretch of basketball. Oregon led 19-14.

Oregon’s offense would start to stutter for a few minutes and Arizona State was able to knock down a few shots to tie the game up at 24. But Duarte hit another 3 to give Oregon the 27-24 lead with just under 8 minutes left in the game.

The 3 point party would continue as Mathis knocked down his second 3 of the night to extend Oregon’s lead. Juiston also knocked down a corner 3 to give Oregon the 36-28 lead with just under 4 minutes left in the half. It was great to see Juiston hit that as he missed one earlier in the game and then passed up an open look from deep. It looked like he had lost a little bit of his confidence so it was fantastic to see him be aggressive and knock down the shot.

Oregon would continue to build on their lead as they lead 40-31 at halftime. Pritchard was having himself a game as he led the team in scoring with 15. He shot 5-7 from 3 and also had 4 assists. Duarte & Mathis were tied for 2nd in scoring with 8 each and Juiston has 7 points.

Oregon shot 9-18 from 3 and overall shot 56 percent from the field. They held Arizona State to shooting 5-15 from deep and they only shot 40 percent from the field.

Similar to the first half both teams would come out of the gate scoring quickly. Pritchard hit his 6th 3 of the game and Duarte was able to hit a couple of buckets to be the second Oregon scorer in double digits. Oregon had added to their lead and led 49-38 with just under 16 minutes remaining.

Arizona State would slowly chip away at the lead as Oregon led 53-46 with 12 minutes left in the half. Duarte continued to have a really solid game as he had 15 points and was knocking down shots consistently. Juiston also had a huge dunk at the end of a fast break that really got the crowd back into the game.

Duarte would continue to shine as he hit a huge 3 to take back the momentum after Arizona State was able to knock down a few shots. The 3 ball gave Oregon the 63-53 point lead with just over 7 minutes left. Pritchard and Duarte had both already scored 20 points.

Pritchard would continue his excellent game as he kept knocking down free throws down the stretch. Juiston hit a big layup with about 40 seconds left to really ice the game.

Oregon ended up winning this one 78-69. Pritchard led all scorers with 29 and he had 3 rebounds and 6 assists. Duarte also had 20 points and 6 rebounds as well. Shakur Juiston quietly had himself a good game as he ended the night with 11 points and 9 rebounds.

Oregon ended up hitting 12 3 pointers compared to Arizona State’s 9. They shot 48.1 percent from the field and only allowed 39 percent. They outrebounded Arizona State 37 to 28.

Overall this was a very quality win and it gives Oregon a 3-1 start in conference play. Pritchard had one of the better games he’s had in his time at Oregon as he hit 6 3’s and hit a lot of big free throws down the stretch.

Up next for Oregon is a trip up north as Oregon takes on Washington State this Thursday night. This trip will be a huge test for Oregon as they’ll be looking for their first road sweep of conference play.
