Press Conference Quotes: Mario Cristobal & Players

On Monday Mario Cristobal was joined by four of his top junior defensive players who mulled the NFL. All four of those players, Jordon Scott, Austin Faoliu, Thomas Graham and Deommodore Lenoir announced they will return to Oregon for their senior seasons.

A very strong defensive unit will bring back four of its leaders and four starters for a big senior season. These players have been the foundation of this defense for a couple of ‘growing pain’ years. This year they will start the season with lofty expectations.

While we wait for Cristobal to name his next offensive coordinator, a topic he quickly touched on, let’s look at some of the top comments from today’s press conference. He also mentioned Jaylon Redd was back with the team resuming his normal duties as well.

Opening Statement:

“As a coach, very grateful to those guys. When you make a decision like that, it’s as purpose-driven as it gets. It speaks very loudly. We all know how special the University of Oregon is.”

On Players (in all sports) returning to Oregon:

“You’re seeing all kinds of different guys and gals making the decision to come back, speaks loudly of this university and the administration. The true investment into the student athlete is uncomparable. It’s second to none. Heck if I was going to school here I’d try and stay for eight years if I could.”

On the OC hire

“We’ve done a lot of work. Before the bowl game, after. We don’t rush these things. When it’s right, it’s right. The candidates are all outstanding. They all bring something to the table that makes us better. I feel like we’re getting closer and closer. I hate to put a timeline on it and end up taking a little longer. But hopefully within the week we can come to a decision on that and move forward.”

On Jaylon Redd:

“I don’t know either. I know he was handling a personal matter. But he has resumed classes and workouts with us and that’s where we’re at.”

What Team is Doing Now:

“This is discretionary time, voluntary workouts. We start up this next week with our fourth quarter program and then into Spring ball.”

On Early Enrollees:

“Early guys that are on campus right now: TJ Bass, Jay Butterfield, Jared Greenfield, Jonathan Denis, Noah Sewell. Noah’s actaully at the Poly bowl (in Hawaii) but he was here already checked into classes. Jake Shipley just got here now. Bradyn Swinson and Bennett Williams. And then we have a handful of guys that get here in March if I’m not mistaken. That’s the nice thing about the quarters system.”

On OC Search:

“We really vet these guys out now. We’re trying to head in a certain direction. Every time you have a vacancy you have a chance to upgrade. It’s not a shot or a dig. You just make sure you bring in the best people for the organization.”

On Rose Bowl win celebration:

“Absolutely and that was one where the 24 hour rule did not apply. The season had come to an end. It was the most incredible bowl post-game I’d ever been a part of. So many guys since they were knee-high wanting to play in a game like this. Just to find a way especially on that last drive. Incredible feeling. I’ve never seen so many tears from some big ugly dudes in my life. It was validation of a blueprint that demanded every ounce of everybody. Kirk Herbstreit, mentioned going out before. You better stop for one second and take in this game and this setting and what it means for so many people.”

Upcoming Schedule:

“I did not make it to the (Coaches) convention. I want to gain more ground on the OC search. Aside from that I wanted to meet and spend time around our new enrollees. I think it’s important to be there. I will be joining Penei and coach Mirabal in Omaha for the Outland trophy celebration. I’ll be on a flight that night for however many days we have in the contact period. Then I’ll come back and we’ll get started with the 4th quarter program.”
