Hoops QUUUUAAAACCCCKKKK - Ducks Land PG Jalen Terry

January 17, 2020

Oregon has landed its first verbal commitment of the 2020 basketball class.

Jalen Terry (0.9785 on the 247Sports Composite) is listed at 6-1 and 160 pounds. He’s the 57th-ranked player in the country  and is the 10th-ranked point guard. He’s from Mount Morris (Mich.), where he attends Beecher High School.

Terry's commitment was really interesting to follow, because at times others schools felt confident about landing him.

Michigan State was the early leader, as he lives less than an hour's drive from the East Lansing campus. Louisville came into the picture in November, and the Cardinals started to trend for him until the crystal ball picks started to flood in for Oregon just a few days ago.

Terry brings variety to his game. He is not a huge body, but he makes up for it with quick first steps to the hoop and great short area quickness.

One of Terry's strongest attributes is ball handling. He looks comfortable with the rock, and he uses that ability to create space to distribute all over the court.

Terry isn’t going to drive to the hoop and finish over players, but he does have a solid midrange game as well as being a decent three-point shooter. Because of his size he’s not a high-level defender, but he has a really high steal rate because he uses his quickness and outstanding anticipation.

This commitment is massive for Oregon's class, as the Ducks already have missed on a few 2020 guys. Terry may not be a 5-star, but he’s an incredibly solid player -- the kind of athlete every great college basketball program needs.

Terry may not start next year, but he should play a big role at point guard. Outside of Will Richardson, Oregon doesn’t have anyone to take over for Payton Pritchard.

I think the most likely scenario will be Richardson starting at point with Terry rotating in and getting solid minutes off the bench. However, there is a very real possibility that Terry pushes his way to be a starter and we see Richardson at shooting guard.

Terry is a huge get for coach Dana Altman and Co. It gives them momentum going into the 2020 recruiting cycle.
