Oregon Football Practice Recap 3.10

March 10, 2020

Oregon opened up the 2nd week of spring practice today and there were a few things to note.

Dawson Jaramillo who was limited last week returned to full action.

Center Ryan Walk was back in shells after being out with an illness.

Kristian Williams, Andrew Faoliu and Brandon Dorlus were absent from practice as they are battling illness.

The first team offense included Tyler Shough, Devon Williams, Johnny Johnson, Mycah Pittman and Hunter Kampmoyer. CJ Verdell was also participating with the ones. His reps are being limited so far during spring ball.

Walk-on Bradley Yaffe was still the quarterback for the 2nd team but Sean Dollars was getting reps at running back which was a bit of a change.

Bennett Williams was working with the ones on defense.

Noah Sewell wasn’t a full participant but he was participating in more drills than he was doing last week.

During this practice they did a little bit of a live scrimmage drill. Shough was the quarterback for the first 3 plays. He started off the drill by hitting Johnny Johnson across the middle on a hook route for roughly a 10 yard pickup. On the second play the pocket started to collapse and he tucked the ball and made a play. He didn’t gain a ton of yards before being touched, but it was great to see him attempt to make a play with his feet.

The third play was really interesting. Devon Williams was lined up on the right side of the field and had Mykael Wright 1-1. Devon essentially ran a post route with a bit of a hesitation move and actually had almost a full step on Wright. He has such long strides and he just glides across the field. Shough threw about a 35-40 yard pass to the outside shoulder of Devon where Wright couldn’t make a play on the ball. Devon lost track of the ball a bit and wasn’t quite able to make the catch. It was a really well thrown ball and once they continue to build their connection that is a play you could see a lot on Saturday’s.

There were a couple of other things that stood out to me about the quarterbacks. Remember, it’s still only the 2nd week of practice so guys are still getting comfortable out there. Tyler Shough looked great on every throw, and he has a really nice tight spiral that finds a way to hit guys in the hands.

Jay Butterfield continues to impress me. He also was dropping some dimes today, and most of his passes were clean.

Bradley Yaffe is still running the 2nd team drills, and while he looks solid his upside physically is a bit limited.

Cale Millen still has a ways to go as does everyone in this unit. His spirals were a bit on the wobbly side, but physically it appears he’s starting to fill out. He definitely looks more cut compared to last fall.
