Taylor Mikesell Discusses Decision to Transfer to Oregon

May 18, 2020

I caught up with Taylor Mikesell after she announced her commitment to Oregon.

Mikesell will be a lethal offensive weapon for the Ducks. The transfer from Maryland shot 42.5% from behind the arc last season.

We talked about her recruiting, as well as what she hopes to achieve over the next couple of years.

On one of the biggest factors in her decision:

“I love how real and down to earth coach (Kelly) Graves is. He took the time to get to know me and my parents over the past few weeks, and I love how he runs his program.

"The freedom to go make plays and reads versus being stuck in a system was very important to me. The winning culture -- I want to win a national championship, and I feel like we can do that here at Oregon.”

On her impression of Graves and his staff:

“They were great! Always checking in with me and my family to see how we were doing. It was great getting to know everyone, and I was really excited to get to campus and be able to see everyone and get to work!”

On how Graves said she’ll fit into his system:

“Yes, being able to play on the ball and off the ball. Coming off screens for shots, whether it’s on the ball or off the ball. ... Just being able to make plays.

"Having the experience of two years in college already, just using some of that experience to be a leader.”

On when she decided to be a Duck:

“Last weekend.”

On her relationship with Sedona Prince:

“I played with Sedona Prince on the U17 USA team in high school, so we’re pretty close. I’m excited to get to play with her again!”

On what she wants to accomplish at Oregon:

“Win the Pac-12 and a national championship. Personally, to grow as a player and person and prepare for the next level.”

On when she hopes to move to Eugene:

"Hopefully, the middle of July.”

On her major and what she hopes to pursue after basketball:

“I’m a communications major, and am interested in broadcasting, announcing or coaching once I’m done with my playing career.”

On what she does during her free time:

“I like to relax, listen to music, paint, be outside, and watch Netflix.”
