Zooming: Ian Umlandt

August 19, 2020

As hinted in my last video, Oregon baseball recruiting coverage is here.

I've wanted to diversify both the site and its YouTube channel.

I can’t guarantee there will be as much coverage of other sprints as there is football; football is our bread and butter here. But baseball was my favorite sport growing up, so I thought it’d be fun to have some occasional coverage.

Ian Umlandt committed to Oregon in early July. He is listed on Perfect Game (a high school baseball recruiting site) as a left-handed pitcher from Tualatin. However, Umlandt tells me Oregon coaches plan to use him as a two-way player, appearing mainly in the outfield when he's not on the mound.

According to Perfect Game, Umlandt is the top player in the state for 2022, and his fastball has already been clocked at 89 mph. The interview touches on all the pitches in his repertoire, including one he’s trying to master, as well as his approach to pitching.

Umlandt joins a 2022 class that stands at seven commits, drawing from Oregon, Washington, California, and even from Canada. You can view the whole class here.
