Zooming: Gabe Howard

August 25, 2020

In the time that I’ve covered football recruiting, one trend caught my attention: The earlier you start, the better.

Now I’m not saying you offer all the players when they’re in seventh grade, as Steve Sarkisian did once during his USC days. But generally, the more time you can give yourself to build a relationship with a player and his family, the better.

And now, it seems the early bird theory has wafted over from the Hatfield-Dowlin Complex to PK Park. In particular, West Linn freshman Gabe Howard tells me the staff’s early efforts made him feel comfortable enough to give his verbal commitment to Mark Wasikowski in late July.

Now, he’s fired up to represent his state at the next level.

As a prep, Howard specializes as a right-handed pitcher with a fastball that clocks in around 84 mph. For a freshman to be throwing that kind of heat before playing a game at the high school level is pretty darn special.

Looking to the future, Howard is working on adding a curveball to his bag of tricks and refining his skills in the outfield, as he hopes to be a two-way player in Eugene. It's a similar situation as with 2022 Oregon baseball commit Ian Umlandt.

I sat down with Howard recently to learn what made Oregon right for him and what his plans are until his arrival at the U of O.
