Oregon Football Recruiting

Zooming: Ty Thompson

October 6, 2020

It’s been a relatively quiet fall so far for many of Oregon’s 2021 commits. Being on the West Coast, many of their high schools opted to delay football until next year.

However, prep sports have resumed in Arizona, home to one of Oregon’s prized pledges: Mesquite High quarterback Ty Thompson from Gilbert (Ariz.).

Thompson has been a focal point for many recruiting conversations since his commitment to Oregon in March. Each time he lets the ball fly, he raises eyebrows and drops jaws: “Wow, did he really just make that throw?”

This year’s fifth-ranked pro-style quarterback (a borderline 5-star at 0.9798 on the 247Sports Composite) continued to light the prep football landscape on fire this summer. With a stellar performance at the Elite 11 finals in Tennessee, he took home the Alpha Dog Award.

Thompson’s stock continued to rise when he received his fifth star on Rivals. If the Composite follows suit, he will become Oregon’s first ever 5-star quarterback.

Mesquite, which won the Arizona 4A state title last season, kicked off 2020 last week in a showdown with Apache Junction. Thompson absolutely tore apart the Prospectors’ defense -- so much so that his services were needed only for the first half.

In just two quarters of play, Thompson threw for 368 yards and 5 touchdowns, on 13 of 18 passing.

I sat down with the Oregon commit on Zoom to talk about that dominant performance. We also touched on what he wants to improve on this season, as well as what he’s excited to experience once he gets to Eugene in less than three months.
