Mario Cristobal Press Conference 10.30

October 30, 2020

On Friday afternoon Mario Cristobal spent time with the media via Zoom taking questions. The Ducks are getting ready to prepare for its first game next Saturday in Eugene with Stanford.

Cristobal updated media on a number of points. His running back room. Top surprises of camp. Some standouts and getting ready for game prep week.

You can read a few of his top quotes below. Video will be added once made available.

Opening Statement:

“Today is our fast Friday. Tomorrow we’re back in pads once again. Just trying to get as many reps as we can and preparing for our first game next Saturday.”

On Starting QB:

“We’re working ourselves through that.”

On Altering Practice Schedule:

“We just changed the format. We had a scrimmage planned and we couldn’t go thorugh with it. We moved it into Tuesday and the rest of the week. It was about 80-90% of the playcount we would have had. But we did get, live work. We got good on good work. It was a litlte bit of a juggling act but overall the players did great handling that.”

On Cam McCormick:

“We’ve taken it slow with Cam. He’s been through a lot. Great football player and he brings a lot. When he’s been through as much as he has, you just take it slow.”

On Depth:

“It depends on what position we are talking about. The running back group has built more than quality depth. The offensive line we’re at 8, close to 9 guys. We’re right on the verge, by the end of tomorrow, we should have a legitimate 2 ½ deep at each group across the board.”

On Standouts:

“Big chunk of guys now. It’s a good chunk. We’ve mentioned a lot of guys last week. A guy that really popped this week were Kristian Williams, Keyon (Ware-Hudson), Seeing a lot of positives from a guy like Adrian Jackson. He can be an unbelievable contributor for this program. I can’t say enough about George Moore and the camp he’s had. Jaylen Smith has done a great job playing offensive line and going to be a contributor. I’m going to end up mentioning the whole roster.”

On Alex Forsyth:

“That’s one of the toughest jobs there is. (Playing center) For those that know Alex, this guy is he’s exactly what you want. He fits exactly what you look for in this program. He just grinds himself into being great. He just earns everything. He lives a purpose-driven life.”

On Team Being Ready:

“They’ve been for a while. You’re always going to look for more polished execution. We’ve had the benefit of watching other teams. That should stoke your fire a little more. In terms of technique and fundamentals, execution, communication, you can’t separate those things. They all go hand in hand here. Who can finish their plays? That’s what we’re looking for on film.”

On Avoiding Breakouts at One Position:

“We strategically do our best to room guys in a fashion. Mathematically it’s impossible. You do try to mitigate the risk as best as possible.”

On Getting Guys Play Time:

“Who’s earned it and who’s going to help us win. I think at times there is forced playing time, trying to get guys experience. We’re working hard to assess, evaluate film. I think you will see a lot of guys play this year. But you look at us traditionally, we play a lot of guys.”

On Spencer Webb:

“Spence has been practicing. He got a little banged up.”

On Biggest Surprise/Concern:

“Got some good surprises. I don’t feel like we have a concern or an issue. Probably just how quick these quarterbacks have picked up this offense, this new system. The leadership is starting to come on.”
