Oregon Announces Several Personnel Hires

February 10, 2021

There has been a lot of turnover in the recruiting and personnel department at Oregon this year. Perhaps some might call it an alarming amount. Others might just understand that’s how this works.

For me, I think we are at a bit of a point of transition with recruiting and personnel departments. Schools are beginning to expand those departments as funds allow. Oregon has been ahead of the curve a bit but others are catching up. Most notably, USC from the Pac-12 among others.

Earlier today Mario Cristobal and the Oregon football account announced a number of hires and promotions. Previously Don Johnson had been promoted to Director of player personnel following the departure of Thomas Arends.

Recently former Oregon defensive lineman Tony Washington was hired by the Ducks. Washington spent his last season at Nebraska as part of its staff.  Washington will come in as Director of player development.

Earlier Wednesday Eden Mahina was announced as the new Director of player academic development. He was promoted from a player development/academics role within the Oregon personnel department.

Soon after Sam Popper was promoted to what looks like a new role within the department. Popper was dubbed the Director of Recruiting Strategy. He was previously an assistant to the director of recruiting.

And last but not least is the addition/hiring of JR Moala from Oregon State. Moala was tabbed the Director of Recruiting Operations for the Ducks. According to his bio on the official Oregon State website, he is cousins with former Duck great Haloti Ngata.
