FOOTBALL IS BACK!

One of my favorite lines in the world. Well Oregon fans we are finally under way with Spring ball. And Mario Cristobal took to the podium via Zoom to tell media about day one.

Just as a reminder, media is not allowed to attend practices this Spring. Previously media was available for the first 20 minutes of practices but that has changed for this Spring. So this media interview and Rob Moseley’s report are your best sources to get a recap of Oregon’s Spring practices.

Here are the top responses from today’s interview from coach Cristobal.

Opening Statement:

“Good afternoon. Really fired up. It’s been great to jump into Spring ball after having a full 6-7 weeks in the fourth quarter program. It showed up in the way we look, our bodies look, the way we move. Pleased with the effort out there. We have to continue growing as a team. We wanted to make sure that we elevate our standards of everything we do. We want to create competition. We have the most early enrollees we’ve ever had at Oregon. It’s impressive the amount of time they’ve put in. We’ve groomed leadership, developed leadership, but we want to have accountability.”

Injuries/Personnel Update (s):

“Sampson (Niu), three guys who are medically retired now. Sampson, Chris Randazzo and the other one is Jonah Tauanu’u. Spencer Webb, Dontae Manning, Jackson LaDuke all good to go. Trey Benson progressing very well. Jaylen Smith had a setback. Cam  McCormick is progressing. Sala hurt himself in USC, he’s progressing, he’ll miss Spring ball. Jaylan Jeffers is really close, might prevent physical work. Justin Flowe progressed very well, expect him to be full-go in two weeks. Sean Dollars had a pretty significant leg injury in workouts. We expect him back at some point during the season. CJ Verdell is full-go.”

Splitting Reps w/ QB’s:

“There’s a lot of talent in that room. We meet with our position groups and let them know what the reps are going to look like. Heading into Spring they know where they are and where they need to get better. These guys did a really good job today.”

On Ty Thompson:

“Day one, all those guys did well. Robbie did really well. Butterfield did really well. Ty looks the part, we knew he was a great talent coming in. In the little that we’ve seen he hasn’t disappointed.”

On Pro Day/Questions on NFL Hopefuls:

“Nothing but great questions really. I do believe the situation out West was different than a lot of the country. It wasn’t postponed, it was cancelled. I don’t think anyone should judge that.”

On Jay Butterfield:

“Jay is doing a great job. He’s a big guy, he’s really talented. The weight room has paid off for him. He’s a guy that can throw it from the hash to the opposite side of the numbers. We expect very big things out of him as well.”

On Robbie Ashford/Baseball:

“Since we got him a center fielder, I expect coach Waz to get me a defensive tackle in the form of a catcher or something. What’s really neat is watching how much fun he’s having.”

On Delayed Start Date:

“It was very important to have the time for true off-field work. Get our bodies right. We like it now that we’re spacing out the days with lifting, film sessions, walk thru’s in between the days.”

Jaylen Smith & Addison’s Positions:

“Jaylen Smith is on defense. Byran Addison is on defense.”

On Offensive Line Notes:

“Really proud of George Moore. Alex Forsyth has become such a great leader. TJ Bass has become a dependable player. Steven Jones at 340-pounds, he’s trimmed down and he looks special. Special in his movements. He lets us do a bunch of things schematically. Logan Sagapolu squats 700 pounds. Jonathan Denis really pops. Dawson Jaramillo is in that mix now because he’s worked hard and transformed his body. “

On New Defense:

“Everyone will tell you right away about how fired up they are about coach DeRuyter. He’s been outstanding.”
