This week Mario Cristobal and staff held its first practice of the work week on Tuesday. Which means that was the first chance to speak with anyone from the team since Saturday.

Two players from the team were made available although no coaches were present. Travis Dye and CJ Verdell spent just under 30 minutes total answering questions from media. Obviously there were a lot of questions about running back depth, the offense and CJ’s injury and decision to return.

Here are the top quotes from those interviews on Tuesday.

Travis Dye

On Shortage of Bodies at RB:

“It’s been pretty tough but we’ve been doing a really good job with it. Me, CJ, Cross and the new cat, Erin, we’ve been getting a lot of reps with some people out. It’s been fun.”

On Improvements:

“I feel like I’ve grown a lot since I got here. I have a lot more to go. I’m never satisfied. I’m coming in with the best attitude, just working and trying to get better each day.”

On Evolving in offense:

“It’s going really well right now. And coach Moorhead used the phrase ‘it’s time to take the training wheels off this year.’ It’s going to be a fun season.”

On Injuries at RB:

“It’s the worst. I was hurt during my freshman year during Spring ball. It’s not fun watching other guys get reps. I’m here for them. My heart goes out to those guys.”

On the OL:

“I have a lot of confidence in my O-Line. They are doing a really good job. We’re getting back to the nastiness on the O-Line, the grit.”

ON CJ Returning:

“Me and him talked about it. We spoke about it. Before the season he was leaning more towards leaving. But he wanted to come back and keep it going. Last year I know there’s a bad taste in his mouth and he’s glad to be back.”

On the QB Battle:

“Anthony is doing a really good job. He’s grabbed the bulls by the horn. The younger guys need more time to improve and to grow, these guys are off-the-roof talented. It’s going to be interesting the next few years to see who comes out on top after Anthony leaves.”

CJ Verdell

On Injury Last Year:

“Actually happened in Wazzu game. I messed up my thumb. I played with the club the last few games. It kind of made it rough but I tried to play through it. I’m good to go. I tore a ligament, there was a whole lot going on.”

On Injuries at RB:

“We always have the next man up mentality. We don’t look at that too much.”

On Coming Back

“I told them I have no problem coming back. I love Oregon, I love the team here, I love the coaches. When I told them I wanted to come back they were all for it.”

On Anthony Brown:

“I love AB. He’s a real leader on and off the field. He builds a good chemistry with all of the guys on offense.”

On Season Goals:

“Definitely Pac-12 (champions). Definitely want to get into that playoff and win a national championship.”

On Having a Full Spring:

“It’s going to be really great for us. We talk about that a lot, not having that full Spring ball. I think it’s going to give us a chance to really mesh.”
