Thursday Presser: Mario Cristobal, Noah Sewell, Jamal Hill, DJ James

April 22, 2021

On Thursday following practice Mario Cristobal met with media to talk about his team and its progress this Spring. This was the first chance to speak with Cristobal since immediately following Saturday’s open scrimmage.

Also linebacker Noah Sewell, safety Jamal Hill and corner DJ James were able to spend time talking with media Thursday.

Below are the top replies from those players as well as head coach Mario Cristobal.

Mario Cristobal

Opening Statement:

“Wrapping up practice No. 10. Heavy emphasis of course on technique and fundamentals. Hats off to the defense today, they brought it today. Really competitive.”

 On QB Rotation:

“They’re still getting even reps. And I think their performance merits that. They’re getting a ton of reps. They all are. You’re looking at 280 reps minimum. We want to make it fair, we want to make it productive.”

On OL Standouts:

“A guy that keeps coming and coming is George Moore. Being very physical, very active with his hands. TJ Bass has been a physical player. All of those guys are doing a great job. Dawson Jaramllo has done a really good job. Proud of Faoope, he’s shed a lot of weight. Him and Logan, when those guys fit you, and then Cross Patton's behind them, you might not find him for half a day.”

On Offensive Development:

“Just feels like a complete offense. You’ve had time to jump into the details of the playbook. Coach Moorhead has done an awesome job of incorporating everyone. We feel like we’re getting to a point that the playbook is going to be something we can completely use.”

On Jamal Hill:

“He’s a special guy, special player. These guys are young. He got a season and 7 games under your belt. But now its moving fast. He responds really well. He enforces the culture of what we do. A huge year coming up for Jamal Hill.”

On Anthony Brown:

“Two things that stick out are pocket presence and decision making. Anthony has done a really, really good job.”

On Fans/Spring Game Plan:

“This past Saturday was an awesome feeling for everyone. Format, we’re going to play a regular game. Enough to look like and feel like a game. At least for a half. There’s a lot of value to playing in front of people.”

Noah Sewell

On LB Rotations:

“It’s good to be honest. Just working with different guys in the group. Building trust with each other, building dependable depth.”

On Learning New Defense:

“Doing good so far. The terminology is different but the concept is the same. We’re getting it down.”

On Having a Spring Scrimmage:

“It was a good opportunity for us young guys who enrolled early last year to have a Spring camp.”

On Justin Flowe Coming Back:

“His presence is difference. Everyone can feel it. He’s running to that rock.”

On Keith Brown:

“A lot of good stuff, just little things just like me. Eye control, reading the offensive linemen.”

On Penei Sewell Draft Thursday:

“I don’t know right now, just talking to my family now to get that situation figured out. It's truly a blessing to see one of my brothers pursuing his dreams.”

On Thibodeaux:

“KT is one of a kind. He always tries to bring the juice.”

Jamal Hill

On ‘New’ Position:

“My position is the same, the nickel spot. I’m just making plays at that spot now.”

On Length at Safety

It looks different. Like a basketball team. That length is going to help us out.”

On Coach Yates:

“Coach Yates coaching style is, he gets after it. He’s going to hold you accountable. I love his coaching style honestly.”

On Learning New Defense:

“It’s been pretty simple for me. I feel like my football knowledge is growing every day. I feel like it’s been pretty easy to be honest.”

On Trikweze Bridges:

He’s growing every day. He’s trusting himself more.

On Bennett Williams:

“If I had to compare somebody to myself, it would probably be Bennett. He’s a dog. He’s instinctive. He’s capable of doing everything.”

On Toughest Receiver in Camp:

“All of them to be honest, Pittman, Redd, Kris Hutson, Josh Delgado for sure. Every rep is a battle.”

On Team this Spring:

“This team is talented. Very, very talented. Fast, physical, smart. “

DJ James

On Emerging as CB2:

“I’m excited for the opportunity. My coaches will have me ready for it. I’m going to take the opportunity and enjoy it.”

On Evolving as a Corner:

“The timing and understanding more of college football. Understanding what routes I’m responsible for. Down and distance.”

On Increased Reps:

“That impacted it a lot. Just getting more opportunities, gave me confidence as a player. More chances to make plays.”

On Deommodore’s Return:

“Having Deommodore back was great. I feel like that was great to have him back. It helped me learn as a player.”

On Number Change:

“I know zero, Deommodore had it. He was somebody I looked up to. I feel like zero was a great number for me to get in when they said it was open.”

On Spring Impression/Standout:

“The brotherhood definitely. Everyone is having fun, trying to get better. Definitely the brotherhood of everyone.”

On Trikweze Bridges:

“Love seeing Trikweze compete. That’s my boy.”

On Excitement for this year’s team:

“The hunger, the want for sure.”
