On Thursday, Mario Cristobal sat down with the media following Oregon’s 11th spring practice to discuss his team and their progress.

Additionally, Rod Chance was available for the media and had time to go over how his secondary is looking in spring practice.

Below are the major points from both Mario Cristobal and Rod Chance.

Mario Cristobal

Opening Statement:

“Wrapping up scrimmage number two, every first and second-team guy, and a few third-team guys got a lot of snaps. There was a lot of focus on our coverage teams, I felt like we made improvement in that area.”

“It was just a really good practice, a lot of good development and guys getting snaps.”

On the defense making a statement:

“The defense came out the first three series and it was hard. Hard to move the ball. They made some big plays and forced some turnovers.”

On the Quarterbacks:

“Anthony Brown took all the first-team snaps, just as he has been. The twos all had their moments of good and bad so it’s hard to say who’s separated themselves.”

On the WR competition/room:

“The older guys have been great. They push the tempo and enforce the culture in a big way.”

“Troy (Franklin) and Dont’e (Thornton) have had really good springs so we’re counting on those guys making an impact.”

“Coach McClendon has made an impact in that room and those guys are bought into working hard. A lot of explosive plays by those guys.”

Rod Chance

How the secondary looks after two scrimmages:

“I’m very pleased with where we are as a unit. We’re very excited to see these young men put themselves in a position to make plays. All the guys handled themselves in and out of different calls. It’s a great learning opportunity for a lot of young men to get some reps.”

On some player development:

“DJ (James) has taken a huge step, preparing to take multiple snaps.”

“Trikweze is one of my surprises this spring, I think he’s done a good job of making his presence felt.”

“Dontae has really begun to learn the position. Once he gets these reps under his belt we’re going to see a jump in his learning development.”

“Jaylin Davies has handled himself thus far for an early enrollee. We’re very proud of where he is right now.”

On Dontae Manning taking his next steps:

“We got him healthy now and he’s got a lot better in terms of movement. We’re excited to get him into more game-like situations so he can utilize his skill set. But he’s special.”
