Where Will Sewell Land?

April 29, 2021

Generational talent.

Let that sink in. That is one of the biggest compliments a player can hear about their ability. It doesn't just mean your good, it means you're likely a hall-of-famer and likely one of the best players at your position.

That is how many people, even outside Oregon circles, describe offensive tackle Penei Sewell. His floor is likely something around being a 10-time all star with a ceiling of being ofe of the best offensive tackles ever in the NFL.

Smply put, if you are a franchise or a GM and you want the 'safe pick’ in this draft, it's probably the 20-year old Sewell. And yes, he's not even old enough to drink legally yet.

His upside is huge, there are no injury concerns, he's strong, he's smart, there's no off field concerns. His play speaks for itself, it's all on the tape.

So where will Penei Sewell land? Even today still he remains the biggest question mark in the top ten of the NFL draft.

The Jaguars will take quarterback Trevor Lawrence, as they should. Everyone also has the Jets taking BYU quarterback Zach Wilson at No. 2. Shanahan, Lynch and the 49’ers are trying to keep everyone in suspense with the No. 3 pick. Does Lynch have a note in his pocket that says 'Mac Jones no matter what' in it? I think he does.

At 4 you have the Falcons, and many expect them to take Kyle Pitts with that pick. If they keep the pick. At 5 you have the Bengals who could take Ja'Marr Chase if they keep the pick.

The Miami Dolphins are at No. 6 and currently seem like the odds-on favorite to draft Sewell. If they keep the pick, Sewell makes sense for the Fins. Protecting their investment in Tua Tagovailoa would be a wise move. They also seem to be targeting several receivers including Pitts, DeVonta Smith and Jaylen Waddle.

The No. 7 pick which currently belongs to the Lions gets real interesting. The Lions could take him and have no regrets. But many think if Trey Lance is still on the board at this point, someone (Patriots & others) is going to trade up to this spot for him.

The Carolina Panthers have No. 8 and so far seem like the next best bet to draft Sewell if they keep the pick and the Dolphins select another player. They don't need a quarterback after trading for Sam Darnold and sending Teddy Bridgewater to the Broncos.

The wild card in it all are the Chargers. They currently hold pick No. 13. And there is a lot of smoke they are hoping to make a move up for Sewell. Which would reunite him with former Duck Justin Herbert. The move would make a lot of sense for a number of reasons. But notably to protect their asset and improve the run game. Additionally it would make a lot of headlines and create a ton of buzz for the franchise. More than it would for anyone else that selects Sewell.

My prediction is the Chargers will make a move up for Sewell. Maybe to 7 if the Lions don't deal the pick for a quarterback. I think the Dolphins will go receiver and you have to get ahead of the Panthers to get him. And like many of you, the Chargers would be my newly adopted NFL team.

Now you have the Jhop prediction. Let's see how it goes.

Draft starts at 5 PM PST.
