Penei Sewell Drafted 7th Overall To The Detroit Lions

April 29, 2021

Penei Sewell was drafted 7th overall by the Detroit Lions

Sewell was one of the most highly touted offensive tackles in quite some time and he lands with a team where he’s expected to come in and fill a massive need for them.

Sewell earned the highesst single-season grade for an offensive tackle according to PFF, and he was a true sophomore which is incredibly unprecedented. Sewell opted out of the 2020 season, but it didn’t change his draft spot at all as he proved he’s one of the most polished offensive tackles coming out of the draft in over a decade.

Sewell slides into a starting spot and will have insanely high expecations. But as we saw with his time in Oregon when he started as a true freshman, he has all of the abilities to have a massive impact day 1. Sewell will compete against left tackle Taylor Decker and former Oregon tackle Tyrell Crosby who is currently projected to be their starting right tackle.

Sewell is Oregon’s 2nd consecutive 1st round pick after Justin Herbert went 6th overall last year. Oregon has done a great job at getting guys drafted the past few seasons under Mario Cristobal, and Sewell has the chance to be an incredibly special player at the next level.
