Player Spotlight: Johnny Johnson III

June 10, 2021

The wide receiver group for Oregon has a few gems and Johnny Johnson III is one of them. He is one of the two receivers on the current roster to hold over 100 career receptions at Oregon. This just goes to show how key Johnson III is to the Ducks’ offense.

In the previous year’s seven-game abbreviated season Johnson III reeled in 19 receptions for 267 yards and two touchdowns. And he still managed those numbers despite the iffy performance at the quarterback spot. He surely won’t WOW anyone with his speed, but not all greats have blazing speed.

Alone, his speed won’t help him gain separation off the line of scrimmage. However, the abilities as a route runner are where Johnson III holds the advantage. His ability to find a sliver of separation leaves him with a knack for making ludicrous catches. The 2nd Quarter, one-footed, sideline catch against Iowa State serves as a reputable example.

This is truly the most important year upcoming for Johnson III. Not only to improve his odds at moving further in his career but also to get this group of underclassmen ready to take the reins.

Johnson III has real potential to stand out for an Oregon offense that has a few question marks after last season. Ultimately, we’ll have to wait. Just like you do for most good things. But how far does Johnson III go in his fifth year -- and final season -- as a Duck?
